For once, I'm not entirely joking around. With about 6 rallies within an hour and a half from me in the next 12 months, I may just be able to convince a copilot to go halfsies.
The bonus being that a) this Volvo is ready to play, and b) on the cult car scene and classifieds these Volvos starting to get hotter than James Hunt's ex-wife in Rush.
But seriously OPPO, CP or Let's Go Rally ?

People always say "there were millions of those made, they're not worth much."
Have you seen one lately?
As someone who's been keeping tabs on Volvos for the past few years, I can confirm that their prices are certainly going up. Assuming all that stuff is put back together, $2500 is a great asking price. If my memory serves me well, which it does, there's absolutely nothing more fun than drifting a RWD volvo through the snow at speed.

Well this isn't helping me talk myself out of it.

NP, no doubt. If this is well built it is worth a lot more really, that's a price for a stock 242.

That's a 242GT (might even be a special edition model) that has either been well cared for or has a loving owner (or both). I haven't clicked on the link, but if the pieces are there and rust isn't a major issue, BUY IT NOW.
No really. Do it. You won't regret it. That looks straight. And the 242GTs were great cars.

Read the ad. Wow. Nice. I would, at the very least, see it and make a decision there. Damn.

The answer is always Let's Go RALLY!!!

Hey Jealousy.... The nearest rally to where I live is 800 miles away...one way. It looks like i'm just going to have to do some other kind of hobby after all. I miss my 242. Soooooo predictable. Soooooo fun.

Great input, thanks. You see, I just bought a second car 3 days ago. A 1987 BMW 325is Coupe with a 5-speed. I bought it as a winter garage project to keep me busy and to eventually have a race car for my friends and I to endurance race at our local tracks.
BUT I have no where to put my cars. So now I'm selling my 2007 VW GTI, and just rented an expensive spot downtown for the BMW. But now there's this Volvo...
It's a 400 km drive from where I live to go see the car but since I'll be kind of heading that direction anyways next weekend, I'll try and go look at it. I'll let you guys know what's what and perhaps add some more pictures here on OPPO. The things I'd like to see are extra sets of wheels and tires, full underbody protection, no rust, and what the owner is storing underneath that cover next to it. :D

Predictable as in "it doesn't bite" at the limit?

Thanks for the input!

Let's go rally! How far are you from Vancouver? I'm moving to Seattle next month so I'll be just over the border. What upcoming rally events are in the area?

well mine had stock suspension. it has a long wheelbase for the track width so swinging it around was easy to do and you could feel the suspension compress and load up. You knew when it would bite and it was easy to plan for that by what you could feel. I used to get a bit silly on the gravel back roads where I went to school and found it to be a more perfect gravel car than a pavement car of all things. I really didn't know very much at the time about what suspension changes would do but looking back on it, a LSD or even a locked diff would have worked wonders on those gravel roads. It only had 105hp as well so i'm sure that reduced any biting or sudden nastyness.
I'm looking at the pictures and I see stock Volvo seats in there. I don't even see any cage through the windows. I googled the rally events they raced it in and it turns out they're TSD events. (time-speed-distance) So that means it was never in any performance rallys and never really RACED on a stage rally event. Therefore it doesn't need a cage or safety gear. You would be buying a normal 242gt street car with a prepped engine and newer consumables. It would be a very fine car to have and you don't see many GT's in good shape. The cool part about this is they use it in fun TSD events and still have a pretty much stock car the whole time. Caging it and stage rallying it would be...well....there would be one less GT out there after that.

I'm on the North Shore so that's just a bridge away from downtown Vancouver. I'm at work, but here are some links to the rally calendars: http://www.rallybc.com/

Reply to this so I can see a notification when I get home and when I have more time to answer.
